Blogging note

There’s an old John Callahan cartoon of a line of people exiting through a door marked “Hell” only to enter through another door marked “Sheer Hell.”  That pretty much sums up what it’s like to go from grading a gigantic stack of papers (as I did last week) to grading a gigantic stack of final exams (as I’m doing now).  Good thing I’ve got some assistance.  Posting may be light for a few days.

  2. Gin and tonic - nice choice. I prefer to sip Jack or Johnnie while grading.

  3. Looks good. Back when I was a TA I'd go to a pub and grade there with a cold one.

  4. My old prof used to say that in the typical university, 5% of the students deserved to be there. Another 10% or so didn't deserve to be there, but manage to rise to the challenge, handle the work and prove their worthiness. The remaining 85%? Well...I'll let you guess.

So, if you dare, as you are grading all this stuff, how much do you find yourself in agreement with the above? :)

Funny. I think you could make the same argument about how many professors deserve to be there. ;)

  7. Hi Mr. Feser,

I have read a fair amount of philosophy books and quite skeptical about the possibility of us arriving at truth/reality (or whatever you termed it) through philosophy. The problem is that all philosophy rests on central axiom which we must take to be self-evidently true. This is the part that concerns me. I have recently encountered websites by ex(?)-philosopher who regarded most philosophy as BS and suggests that if we accept any axiom, we can believe in anything consistently including solipsism which he claims irrefutable. What is your take on this?

  9. Maybe Dr Feser could call in sick on Monday and grade his papers then? Meantime he could post some more on his blog? :-)
